To write a video essay script, start with one sentence someone could disagree with. That's your thesis. Then collect evidence for it, put the evidence in an order that builds, answer the strongest objection, and end by saying the thesis again so it means more than it did at the start.
I've written 10,000+ YouTube scripts across 100+ niches. The video essays that hold attention all do one thing: they change how the viewer sees something they thought they understood.
A video essay is an argument
A documentary tells you what happened. A video essay tells you what it means.
"The history of fast food" is a topic. "Fast food won because it sold certainty, and the food was secondary" is a thesis. You can build a script on the second one, because every section now has a job: prove it.
I call this the angle. The angle is the script. Two people can cover the same subject, and the one with the sharper angle gets watched.
Step 1: Find a thesis worth arguing
Take your topic and write five to ten different claims about it. Then run two tests on each.
- Could a reasonable person disagree? If not, it's a fact. Narrow it until someone would push back.
- Is it already on the first page of search results? Search the topic on DuckDuckGo, which shows what the average person sees. If your thesis is sitting there, viewers already have it. Go deeper or take the other side.
Step 2: Build the evidence
Every claim in the script needs three layers.
- The specific detail. A number, a date, a scene.
- The source. Where it came from.
- The story behind it. The person or moment that makes it stick.
The best material is usually where other creators don't look: the methods section of a study, court records, news from ten or twenty years ago, a book that argues against what everyone in the field repeats.
Step 3: Order it so each piece raises the next question
Don't arrange evidence by date or by importance. Arrange it so each piece answers one question and opens another.
My usual order for the main points is second best first, best in the middle, third best last. The strong start earns attention and the best point lands when viewers are most likely to drift.
Point at your conclusion three times before you reach it: in the hook, around minute three, and around minute eight.
Step 4: Answer the best objection
Somewhere past the middle, state the strongest case against you, fairly, and say why you still hold your view.
Viewers are already thinking of it. If you raise it first, they trust the rest. If you skip it, they write it in the comments and leave.
Step 5: Write it the way you'd say it
Essays drift into academic language. Video can't afford that, because the viewer can't re-read a sentence.
- Build the scene around the number. Put the viewer somewhere, then give them the figure.
- Translate hard ideas into something they've held or seen. The everyday comparison comes first. The technical explanation comes second.
- State the point before you explain it. Then show it, then say it again in other words.
Video essay script template
THESIS: [your argument in one sentence. Someone should be able to disagree with it.] HOOK (0:00 to 0:50) [The belief most viewers hold.] [One specific thing that doesn't fit that belief.] [What they'll see differently by the end.] WHY IT MATTERS (to 2:00) [Who this is for. What it costs them to keep the old belief.] EVIDENCE 1: [one line] [A scene, a case or a number with its source.] [What it shows.] TURN: [the question this raises] EVIDENCE 2: [one line] ... TURN: ... THE BEST OBJECTION [The strongest case against your thesis, stated fairly.] [Why you still hold your view.] EVIDENCE 3: [your strongest piece] ... CLOSE [Say the thesis again in its final form. It should mean more now than it did at the start.]
Where video essays go wrong
- No thesis. Twenty minutes of interesting facts that add up to nothing.
- The thesis arrives at the end. The viewer needed it in the first minute to know why they were watching.
- Background first. Three minutes of history before the argument starts.
- It ends on a summary. End on the thesis in its final form, with everything the viewer now knows behind it.

Common questions
What is a video essay?
A video essay is a video that argues one point, the thesis, and supports it with evidence, examples and narration. A documentary tells you what happened. A video essay tells you what it means.
How long should a video essay script be?
Long enough to make the argument and answer the best objection. Narration runs at about 150 words a minute, so a 12-minute essay is roughly 1,800 words.
How do you start a video essay?
Start with the belief most viewers already hold, then show one specific thing that does not fit it. That gap is the reason to keep watching.
Do video essays need a thesis?
Yes. Without a thesis you have a list of observations. The test is whether a reasonable person could disagree with your one-sentence summary. If nobody could, it is a topic and you need to narrow it.
